O. Alan Gianniny, Jr. (1925-2012) was born in Charlottesville, Va. He earned a degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Virginia in 1947 and earned master's and doctoral degrees in education at the University of Virginia. He taught in the English department before transferring to the Engineering School.
