Biographical / Historical

The organizational meeting of the Virginia Surgical Society was held May 23, 1953, in Richmond. Officers were elected, a constitution adopted, and plans made for an annual business and scientific meeting. According to the constitution, originally membership in the Society was "limited to men in good Standing in the Medical Society of Virginia." The 1969 amended constitution states, "Active membership in the Society shall be limited to surgeons in good standing in the Medical Society of Virginia." The May 1992 VSS Annual Meeting program indicates that the Society is a "Virginia Chapter of the American College of Surgeons." As of 2019, the Virginia Surgical Society is considered a related but separate organization from the Virginia Chapter of the American College of Surgeons (ACS). The purposes of the Virginia Surgical Society "The purposes of the Virginia Surgical Society are to promote excellence in surgery in Virginia through the superb programs at the annual meeting and to promote a cordial association among the surgeons and their families."
