The processing, arrangement, and description of the Doctor V. Jewell Account Books commenced and was completed in April 2011. Initial description was completed in or prior to May 1970.
Doctor Valentine Jewell was born in Floyd County, Virginia, on September 12, 1885, to parents Commodore H. and Arena Ellen Shank Jewell. He married Effie Myrtle Hoback Sisson (1890-1962), the daughter of Noah and Gillie Ann Sowers Hoback, in 1910. The Jewells had one child, an adopted son named Trent Lee Jewell (1920-1938). The 1930 census describes Doctor V. Jewell as a general store merchant, residing in Montgomery County's Elliston township. Jewell died on July 5, 1942, and is buried in Montgomery County's Piedmont Cemetery.
This collection contains account books maintained by Doctor V. Jewell, a Montgomery County, Virginia general store merchant and, with his wife, manager of the Crockett Springs Hotel near Shawsville.
Included is a ledger covering the years 1898-1900, and showing the accounts of the hotel employees, with one column showing charges to individual staff members for goods purchased, uniforms, and breakages, and the other column showing wage credits (with most being paid $.50 per day). The back of the volume contains several pages on which the 1899 wage expenses of the hotel have been grouped by labor type (dining room, livery, kitchen, and laundry), including the total amount paid to each worker.
The collection also includes two ledgers, for the years 1898-1900, detailing customer accounts and containing names, dates, and charges for such things as boarding, transportation, and laundry. The second of these ledgers contains an illustrated brochure for the Crockett Springs Hotel.
Also contained in the collection is a single account book relating to Jewell's general store. The first section of the volume details customer accounts, including names, dates, items purchased and prices paid. The latter half of the ledger seems to relate to the store's accounts with banks and other businesses. The back of the ledger contains several business documents, consisting mostly of invoices and receipts.
The collection is arranged by ledger type.
