The Southwest Virginia Improvement Company was founded in 1880 to develop mining operations in the Pocahontas coalfields of Virginia's Tazewell County and West Virginia's Mercer and McDowell counties. It reorganized in 1901 as the Pocahontas Colleries Company. It then merged with the Pochahontas Consolidated Company in 1907 to form the Pocahontas Consolidated Colleries Company. Its name changed to the Pocahontas Fuel Company in 1917. In 1956, the Consolidation Coal Company acquired Pocahontas Fuel; Consolidation Coal was renamed Consol Energy in 1991.
This collection consists of a single notebook containing notes from meetings of the incorporators of the Southwest Virginia Improvement Company. The meetings were held at New River Depot, Virginia, in October and November, 1880. The notes document approval of the act (not included here) that incorporated the company, the appointment of officers (Jas. E. Eskridge, chair; G. C. Wharton, secretary), the opening of books for subscription of stock, and the resignation of officers.
