The K. S. Culnan and C. A. O'Neale Typescript Book was acquired by Special Collections and University Archives prior to 1993. Originally cataloged for the department's rare book collection, the book was transferred to the manuscripts holdings in 1992.
The processing and description of the K. S. Culnan and C. A. O'Neale Typescript Book commenced and was completed in September, 2023.
Kenneth Stuart Culnan, son of Robert and Janet Culnan, was born in Washington, D. C., on April 5, 1947. He obtained a bachelor's degree from the the College of Architecture at Virginia Tech in 1971, and married Carol A. O'Neale, his co-author and College of Architecture classmate, shortly afterward. Culnan worked as an architect for several years and later in the construction industry. Kenneth S. Culnan died on April 26, 2018.
Carol Ann O'Neale of Alexandria, Virginia, was born on June 14, 1947. Attending Mount Vernon High School and later graduating from Fort Hunt High School in 1965, O'Neale participated in many extracurriculars, including art club, French club, class council, and majorettes. In 1971, she obtained a bachelor's degree from the College of Architecture at Virginia Tech. Shortly after graduation, O'Neale married K. S. Culnan, her co-author, and changed her name to Carol O'Neale Culnan. Some time after graduating, she became involved in the Early American Industries Association.
This collection consists of an unbound typescript book entitled "Space Structure Building Systems Applied to a Housing Complex and an Airport Terminal Facility." Authored by Virginia Tech College of Architecture students K. S. [Kenneth S.] Culnan and C. A. [Carol A.] O'Neale, the book was presented on August 31, 1970, under the advisory of professors D. Ding, H. Elarth, and M. Sevely. The book consists of 14 leaves of text and 27 leaves of images.
