A resident of Floyd County, Virginia, John Carr enlisted as a private in the Second Stuart Horse Artillery, Army of Northern Virginia, Confederate Army in Richmond, Virginia, on April 15, 1862, after he was recruited by John Pelham. His brother Joseph served in the same battery of the 2nd Stuart Horse Artillery.
This collection contains photocopies and transcriptions of the Civil War letters of Private John Carr, 2nd Stuart Horse Artillery of the Confederate Army. Addressed to his wife Julia and son John, the letters were written by John Carr while in Confederate camps in southern Virginia in 1862 and 1863. He discusses his health, troop movements, and his debts. The typed transcriptions also contain a small amount of biographical information about Carr.
