The Piedmont Tuberculosis Sanatorium (Burkeville, Virginia) was a hospital open to African American patients in order to treat tuberculosis from 1917-1965. Shortly after the sanatorium opened, a two-year school for training African-American nurses was opened, and it closed in 1960.
In 1967, the institution became the Piedmont State Hospital, offering psychiatric treatment as well as medical treatment for chronic lung diseases. It moved from the State Department of Health to the State Department of Mental Hygiene and Hospitals. The hospital eventually became the Piedmont Geriatric Hospital, offering mental health services to patients over the age of 64. It is a part of the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services.
