Collection is open to all researchers. Manuscript collections and archival records may contain materials with sensitive or confidential information that is protected under federal or state right to privacy laws and regulations, such as the Virginia Public Records Act (Code of Virginia. § 42.1-76-91); and the Virginia Freedom of Information Act (Code of Virginia § 2.2-3705.5). Content Description

This collections consists of photographs and papers primarily belonging to Doris Crump Rainey, but also her husband Herbert Rainey, who both lived in Williamsburg. Doris was involved with a local neighborhood association of women called the Philodendron Club; some local Baptist churches, especially Mt. Ararat Baptist Church; and with her 40th and 50th high school reunion from the class of 1945 Bruton Heights School (BHS). The papers and photos also show that the Raineys were involved in the local community through their participation in the NAACP and the International Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks (IBPOE), a fraternal organization. Many of the photos saved by Doris in scrapbooks, some of which are still preserved in the collection, show these personal and community activities, but a significant number are family photos from over a long period of time from at least the 1950s to the present in addition to report cards, certificates, and other recognitions that her three children received.
