The Beard Family Account Book was donated by Helen Moore Williams, a descendant of John Moore, one time owner of Aldie Mill (1807-1971). John Moore married Matilda Beard, daughter of Stephen Beard and Orpah Lacey. Stephen Beard lived at Ish's Tanyard, located on Route 50; he was postmaster at Goshen in 1816. Goshen was the first post office in Eastern Loudoun County (1800-1821).
This collection consists of one account book, a 13 x 8 inch leather bound volume, and includes receipts for general merchandise and tolls collected during the 1820's-1840's at an undetermined location. Inclusive dates for the book are 1795-1848, with bulk dates of 1796-1840. It includes names of many prominent Loudoun County residents: Ball, Beard, Benton, Carter, Edwards, Gibbs, Harrison, Hutcherson, Lacey, Lewis, Luckett, Mason, Monroe, Moore, Neele, Noland, Powell, Rust, Spencer, Timms, and Whitely. Inserted in the ledger are several undated receipts signed by Charles Binns, Clerk of the Court in Loudoun County (Charles Binns Sr., Clerk of the Court 1757-1797, Charles Binns Jr., Clerk of the Court 1797-1837), a letter to Mr. Thomas H. Gallaher from Thomas Moore and several loose items related to the listed receipts. The back cover of the book appears to be signed by Stephen Beard.
