Josiah Ryland Collection, mss 00022, Virginia Military Institute Archives, Lexington, Virginia.
The collection was donated to the Virginia Military Institute in 1932 by Mrs. L. W. Ryland.
Josiah Ryland was born at Stevensville, King and Queen County, Virginia, on July 28, 1838. He was the son of Joseph and Priscilla Bagby Ryland. After graduating from the Virginia Military Institute in 1859, Ryland taught school at Stevensville until the beginning of the Civil War. In the Spring of 1861 he helped to organize the King and Queen Artillery and subsequently served in the 9th Virginia Cavalry.
Ryland married Lucy Olivia White, daughter of Oliver White of Fleetwood Academy, VA, on February 25, 1865. The couple had three sons and three daughters. His post-war careers included farming and teaching in King and Queen County, and service in Virginia state government in the Auditor's office. He died on October 15, 1900 at his home in Barton Heights, Henrico County, Virginia.
The Josiah Ryland Collection consists of an autograph album kept by Ryland while he was a cadet at the Virginia Military Institute in 1859. It contains inscriptions written by his classmates.
