Simeon Oliver Coxe, Jr., was born at Rapidan, Virginia on August 15, 1910. He graduated from the Virginia Military Institute in 1933 with a degree in Civil Engineering, and received a Master's degree from Cornell University. He was a Civil Engineer for his entire career, working in Knoxville, New Orleans, and Mobile. Mr. Coxe married Mary Cadell Moses in 1936; the couple had three children. He died at Spanish Fort, Alabama on October 6, 1999.
The Simeon O. Coxe collection contains a one volume typewritten transcription of letters written by Cadet Coxe (Virginia Military Institute Class of 1933) to his parents in Richmond, Virginia. The letters cover Coxe's entire cadetship (1929-1933) and contain a detailed record of VMI student life during early 1930's. Topics include daily routines; hazing; financial concerns; academics; athletics; ROTC summer camp at Fort Hoyle, Maryland; and the Ring Figure dance.
