These records came to the Library of Virginia in shipments of court papers Highland County under an undated accession.
Prior to 2025, the various organization records in this collection were originally described as individual records, but they have been consolidated into one large organization record for the locality. Since 2025, these records additionally include identified but not processed records.

Context for Record Type: Organization Records, both volumes and loose records, are in some cases transferred to the Library of Virginia as components of court record transfers. These organization records in some cases were simply stored in the local court building for safe keeping by business owners. In other cases, organization records (particularly ledgers, account books, etc.) may have been filed in a court case as an exhibit. These organization record exhibits appeared both in chancery causes and in judgments, these records serving as exhibits for business dissolution cases, debt suits, and contract disputes.
Locality History: Highland County was so named because of its high altitude, which ranges from 1,611 to 4,491 feet, giving it one of the highest mean-elevations east of the Mississippi River. The county seal identifies it as "Virginia's Switzerland." It was formed from Pendleton (now in West Virginia) and Bath Counties in 1847. The county seat is Monterey.

Historical Information: Modern Woodmen of America was founded in 1883 by Joseph Cullen Root, an Iowa businessman, to provide financial services, life insurance, and opportunities for fellowship for men ages 18 to 45. The Monterey Camp was organized 1910 May 4.
The minute book, 1910-1911, documents the election of officers and attendance at monthly meetings from May 1910 to May 1911. Income and expenses were recorded in the back of the book on pages 109-116.
The pass report book, 1910-1912, is a book of forms issued by the Modern Woodmen of America for recording dues collected and benefits paid to members each month. In the front of the book, there is a page of instructions to camp clerks outlining the recommended financial policies for each camp.
