Biographical Information
James Hollis Rinehart (1871-1942) brought his family to Albemarle County and Charlottesville from Covington, Virginia. The Rinehart family owned thousands of acres and owned multiple buildings in Charlottesville, which they rented out. Hollis Rinehart was in the railroad business, a banker, and was on the Board of Visitors for the University of Virginia. He was responsible for the construction of many significant landmarks in Charlottesville and Albemarle County. He was also on the County's Board of Supervisors. Rinehart founded the National Bank and Trust Co. in 1914 and served as its president until 1926.
Another notable Rinehart in the community are his grandson William (Bill) Alonzo Rinehart III and and his wife Jill. William was in the insurance business and on the Charlottesville city council while Jill was the first city councilwomen in Charlottesville and has a library named after her at the University of Virginia's Women's Center.
Scope and Content
This collection covers the breadth of Hollis Rinehart's business financial transactions in the Charlottesville and Albemarle area, spanning 1900-1934. Included are payroll ledgers, cancelled checks, business correspondence, and professional correspondence with Virginia Governors Price, Davis, Trinkle, and Battle. The collection also contains humorous speeches to the Colonnade Club from 1916-1925 and assorted miscellaneous memorabilia, both family and professional.
