Biographical/Historical Information
In February 1862, the Virginia General Assembly passed an amended and re-enacted second section of Chapter 22 of the Code of Virginia concerning exemptions from military duties, included a list of who was exempted, how each county was to create their exemption board, and how the board was to operate. Albemarle County's three-member board consisted of John J. Bowcock (1803-1892), Robert R. Prentis (1818-1871), and James W. Mason (1814- ).
Scope and Content
This is a photocopy of the minutes of the Albemarle County military exemption appeal board. The first page is faded. The location of the original is unknown.
