Biographical/Historical Information
Alan M. Bruns (1927-2009) was born in Brooklyn, New York, the son of Mary Bryan Bruns and John D. Bruns. Alan grew up at his grandparents' summer home, Dungannon, in Buckingham County, Virginia, on the James River near Howardsville. While in high school, he worked as a C and O railroad telegrapher during World War II. He graduated from Scottsville High School and attended the University of Virginia. He began his newspaper career with the Charlottesville Daily Progress, followed by the Richmond Times Dispatch and the Washington Star. His last job was with the Congressional Record Index Office. He lived near Fredericksburg, Virginia after retirement. He devoted the last years of his life compiling local and family histories.
Scope and Content
This is a collection of Bruns' compilations of various local topics and his memories around the Howardsville region. The folders contain photographs of people and buildings that were in the area.
