Biographical/Historical Information
Jeffery Amherst, 1st Baron Amherst of Montreal KB (January 29, 1717 – August 3, 1797) served as an officer in the British Army and as Commander-in-Chief of the Forces. Born in Sevenoaks, England, Amherst became a soldier at approximately the age of 14. After service in the War of the Austrian Succession, Amherst gained fame during the Seven Years' War, particularly in the North American campaign known in the United States as the French and Indian War.
Scope and Content
Granted to Baron Amherst to serve as captain-general and Governor of Virginia. Revokes letters-patent to Earl of Loudoun. Signed by J. Haynes.
