Historical and Biographical Information
In July 1927, Frederick Brenckman, organizer for the National Grange, met with a number of Centreville, Virginia residents who agreed to aid in forming a grange in the community. The grange was founded to provide farmers an outlet for social activities and economic and political action. Meetings occurred in local schools or churches. By August 1927, formation of the Centreville Grange was completed and consisted of 17 charter members including John T. DeBell, master; R. Colton Lewis, lecturer; Helen Quigg, secretary; and Mrs. A.J. Robey, treasurer.
In May 1931, Centreville Grange changed its name to Providence Grange. The name was suggested by Worthy Master Ronald Blake. By that point the grange was no longer meeting in Centreville but in Oakton, Virginia, and membership had expanded to different communities within the Providence Magisterial District. The Providence Grange disbanded in 1953.
