Originally accessioned as "Ledger G", subsequent research showed the ledger to belong to Cazenove and Co.

Historical Note

Cazenove and Co was founded by Anthony Charles Cazenove, who established himself as a merchant in Alexandria in 1798. He later partnered with his son-in-law, William Collins Gardner. It was later run by William Gardner Cazenove in partnership with Cassius F. Lee before being ruined by the Civil War.

Originally a dry goods store, it developed into a larger import-export company.

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of a large ledger book containing account information from Cazenove and Co. for the years leading up to the Civil War. Accounts for partners William Gardner Cazenove and Cassius F. Lee are marked differently.

A typed index of the ledger is available in the accopanying folder, as well was a volume of Alexandria History containing an article on the ledger's identification and historical context. This article is also available online.

Duke University holds records of Cazenove and Co for 1860-1868 including a list of debtors.

The Cazenove Family Papers (Ms 212) contains a large volume of business records relating to the earlier history of Cazenove and Co as well as some material relating to Cassius F. Lee and William Garner Cazenove.
