Biographical / Historical
The Alexandria Gazette is a long-running daily, newspaper published in Alexandria, Virginia. It predecessors date back to the late 18th century. The paper reports on local news and was especially active in reporting events surrounding the Civil War (1861-1865). Its political affiliations have led to numerous instances of press supression throughout its history.
The newspaper was formally published as Alexandria Gazette in 1834 by Edgar Snowden. It remained under this name until 1974 when it became The Gazette . From 1978 until 1987 it was The Alexandria Gazette and from 1987 until 1991 it was the Alexandria Gazette Packet . Since then the newspaper has undergone several more name changes and still produces content.
Scope and Contents
The Alexandria Gazette I, 1942 - circa 1991, contains nearly 230 photographs taken for and published in the Alexandria Gazette . Notable Alexandrians, politicians, events, and historic sites are captured. Several photographs have their original captions included.
