Historical Information
The Battle & Company Chemists' Corporation (also known as Battle & Co.) was founded by brothers Cullen Andrews Battle and Jesse Mercer Battle circa 1875 in St. Louis, Missouri. The company gained an international reputation for its medications, including Bromidia, and had storefronts in the United states, England, France, and India. Papine was manufactured by the company and was advertised and used as a painkiller. In a promotional booklet from the company, the drug is described as follows: "Papine is derived from opium, and retains all its anodyne properties...It is a remedy producing certain and rapid effects, and has so wide an application that no physician can successfully dispense with its use" (National Library of Medicine).
Scope and Content
Two pamphlets that present testimonials from doctors attesting to the pain-relieving efficacy of "Papine," an opiate-based medicine. The pamphlets are titled "An Opiate" and "Pain - Its Importance and Therapeusis," and dated May and August 1896 respectively. The pamphlets were distributed by Battle & Co., Chemists' Corporation of St. Louis, Missouri, which also manufactured the drug.

The Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History and the Science Museum in London, England both hold bottles of Papine in their collections.
The National Library of Medicine also holds a booklet on Papine and other medicines produced by Battle & Co.
