Use of These Materials
The nature of the Hampden-Sydney College Archives and Special Collections means that copyright or other information about restrictions may be difficult or even impossible to determine despite reasonable efforts. As a result, Hampden-Sydney College claims only physical ownership of most Special Collections materials. The materials from our collections are made available for use in research, teaching, and private study, pursuant to U.S. Copyright law. Collection is open for research; access requires at least 48 hours advance notice. Because of the nature of certain archival formats, including digital and audio-visual materials, access will require additional advanced notice. Copies of digital files will be provided for use upon request.

Biographical / Historical Note
Dr. Ralph A. Rossum earned his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Chicago and has authored several books on the subject of Constitutionalism. Rossum served as Associate Dean of the Graduate School at Loyola University of Chicago, Vice President and Dean of the Faculty at Claremont McKenna College, and as President of Hampden-Sydney College for nine months between 1991 and 1992. Dr. Rossum is currently the Director of the Rose Institute of State and Local Government and the Professor of American Constitutionalism at Claremont McKenna College. He is also a member of the faculty of Claremont Graduate University.
Scope and Contents
The Dr. Ralph Rossum Papers document Rossum's tenure as president of Hampden-Sydney College from 1991 to 1992 along with some documents relating to his previous position as dean of faculty at Claremont McKenna College. Primarily dating between 1988-1992, the collection includes documents related to his acceptance and inauguration as president of Hampden-Sydney, some correspondence and miscellaneous items from his short time as president, and items related to his departure as president with some information about him post-departure.
