Administrative History
The Xi of Virginia chapter of Phi Beta Kappa Society was established at James Madison University in 2010 after its charter was formally granted at the society's 42nd Triennial Council in October 2009. Phi Beta Kappa is the oldest academic honor society in the United States. Students must meet certain academic requirements to be eligible for membership including majoring in the liberal arts and sciences.
Scope and Contents
The Phi Beta Kappa Chapter Applications, 2006-2007, comprise two applications to shelter a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa at James Madison University. Both applications were authored by JMU's Phi Beta Kappa Committee.
Each application includes a table of contents and a multi-page cover letter outlining the university's qualifications for sheltering a Phi Beta Kappa chapter. The applications are further divided into sections covering general university information concerning academics, curriculum, students and enrollment, faculty, financials, library resources, and athletics. Appendices include letters of support and examples of undergraduate research.
Arrangement
The applications were removed from their respective three-ring binders, arranged chronologically, and foldered according to application section and appendix.
