In the 1990s the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association began a phased construction plan to upgrade visitor experience and build
a much-needed storage space on the estate. The first phase, completed in 1998, resulted in Conservation Complex and Volunteer
Center with additional staff parking and expanded lower gate. Phase Two included the expansion of food service and retail,
adding a food court style pavilion and doubling the size of the gift shop space. The final phase led to the erection of the
Orientation Center, Education Center, and Museum. This collection focuses on Phase Two and the plan for more dining and shopping
options at Mount Vernon.
The bulk of this collection are the reports on construction progress done by the contracted company, and the meeting minutes,
agendas, and reports of the Oversight Committee who handled the process on behalf of Mount Vernon. Other types of records
include correspondence, contracts, permits, memos, and photographs. The inclusive date range is 1995-2001.
