The Virginia State Board of Nursing (VBON) is the regulatory body responsible for overseeing the practice of nursing in Virginia.
It was established in 1919, making it one of the older nursing boards in the United States. Its creation was part of a broader
movement to regulate nursing practice and ensure public safety.Its primary functions include:
Licensure: The board issues licenses to qualified nursing professionals, including registered nurses (RNs) and licensed practical
nurses (LPNs). It sets the standards for educational programs and examinations.
Regulation: VBON establishes regulations and guidelines that govern nursing practice to ensure public safety and the competence
of nursing professionals.
Disciplinary Actions: The board investigates complaints against nurses and has the authority to take disciplinary actions
if violations of nursing regulations occur.
Education and Standards: VBON sets standards for nursing education programs in Virginia and monitors compliance to ensure
that nursing schools meet the required criteria.
Public Health Advocacy: The board also works to promote public health and safety through nursing practices, policies, and
education initiatives.
The VBON is comprised of members appointed by the governor, including nurses and public representatives, ensuring a diverse
perspective in decision-making.
