Biographical / Historical

John Robinson Waddy was born in 1834 in Eastville, Virginia and graduated VMI in 1853. Prior to 1861, he was an officer in the United States Army and then was an officer in the Confederate States of America. Waddy was also a farmer, businessman, and postmaster. He died in 1903 in Norfolk, Virginia.

Scope and Contents

This collection consists of one letter of recommendation (dated October 27, 1856) written by VMI Superintendent Francis H. Smith on behalf of John R. Waddy. In the letter Smith recommends Waddy for a commission in the United States Army.
