Source of Acquisition
The Wiley B. King Account Book was acquired by the University Libraries in 1940 and transferred to Special Collections and University Archives.
Processing Information
The processing and description of the Wiley B. King Account Book commenced and was completed in April 2011. Initial description was completed in or prior to May 1970.
Biographical Note
Wiley Banks King, son of Thomas B. and Sallie Eaton King, was born on October 17, 1881. He entered into business with his father under the name King & Son, which operated at Poplar Hill (Giles County), Virginia. By 1911, the business was operated solely under the name of W. B. King, and by 1917 had ceased operation. King married Martha K. Shannon (1882-1960) in 1904, and the couple would have five children. W. B. King died on May 2, 1957, and is buried in Giles County's Shannon-King Cemetery.
Scope and Content
This collections consists of an account book maintained by Wiley B. King, a general store merchant in Poplar Hill (Giles County), Virginia. The book contains customer names, dates of purchases, goods purchased, and prices paid.
