Source of Acquisition
The William T. Munsey Account Books was acquired by the VPI Agricultural Branch Library in 1939 or 1940 and transferred to Newman Library in 1955.
Processing Information
The processing, arrangement, and description of the William T. Munsey Account Books commenced and was completed in August 2013. Initial description was completed in or prior to May 1970.
Biographical Note
William Tunis Munsey, son of Jacob and Margaret Jane Henderson Munsey, was born in Giles County, Virginia in December 1867. He married Blanche S. Burton (1880-1954), and the couple would have three children. Munsey seems to have remained all his life in the community of Bane (Giles County), where he farmed and operated a general store. William Munsey died in Giles County in 1946, and was buried in Munsey Cemetery.
Scope and Contents
This collection contains ledgers maintained by William T. Munsey, proprietor of a general mercantile business in Giles County, Virginia, during the early 20th century. Included are account ledgers and day books detailing customer account transactions. Entries include customer names, dates of transactions, goods, purchased, and amounts paid. The collection also contains records of the store's cash and bank transactions.
