The Thomas E. Dashiell Collection was donated to Special Collections in 1964 and 1979.

Biographical Note
Thomas Edward Dashiell was born July 16, 1876, in Accomac, Virginia. Dashiell attended the Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College from 1893 through 1896, dropping out due to the illness of his father, Thomas Jefferson Dashiell. While at the Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College, Thomas Dashiell became a popular football player and participated in the first game against the Virginia Military Institute in November of 1894. After leaving the college, Dashiell took a job working at Merchants and Farmers Bank; he married Adelia Howland Nash in January of 1902. Together, they had two children, Katherine Nash Dashiell and Mrs. Eleanor Graham. Thomas E. Dashiell died in September 1970 in Butler, Pennsylvania.
Scope and Content
The collection consists of materials from Thomas Edward Dashiell's time as a student at the Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College. Materials include invitations and programs from Lee Literary Society events, the Honor List for 1894-1895 and Dashiell's grade reports from 1894 and 1895. Also included are two letters: one from Ellison A. Smyth to Dashiell's father, Thomas Jefferson Dashiell regarding permission to participate in a football game in Charlotte, North Carolina dated November 12, 1895; the other letter, dated December 16, 1895, is a notification of a change to the semester schedule in order to accommodate a trip to Richmond for a reunion of Confederate Veterans and the laying of the corner stone of the Davis Monument. The collection also includes a copy of a newspaper article about the VAMC-VMI game.
