Source of Acquisition
The Stephen Spender Papers were purchased by the Virginia Tech Library in 1972 and transferred to Special Collections in February 1974.
Processing Information
The processing, arrangement, and description of the Stephen Spender Papers was completed proor to 2010. Additional description was completed in January 2011.
Biographical Note
Sir Stephen Harold Spender (February 28, 1909 - July 16, 1995) was an english poet and novelist who worked with the themes of social injustice and class struggle. He was a Professor of English Literature at University College in Oxford, and author of over fifty works.
Ian Hamilton (March 24, 1938- December 27, 2001) was a British literary critic, reviewer, poet and magazine editor/publisher. It was at his job at the Times Literary Supplement , holding the position from 1965-1973.
Scope and Content
The Stephen Spender Papers includes correspondence to Stephen Wall, Graham Ackroyd, "Mr. Hamilton," and "Charles" and typescripts of poems, including "Middle East" and "Song."
Arrangement
The materials are arranged by likeness with each grouping in an envelope. The first envelope contains a number of published poems of Stephen Spender. The second envelope contains letters arranged by correspondent.
