Source of Acquisition
The Van Buren-Oliver Family Collection was donated to Special Collections in July 1982.
Processing Information
The processing, arrangement, and description of the Van Buren-Oliver Family Collection was completed prior to 2010. Additional description was completed in January 2011.
Biographical Note
Mrs. Etta V. Oliver was married to J. C. Oliver of Blacksburg, Va. She had three children, Russell van Buren Oliver, Welford T. Oliver and Nina Oliver.
Russell van Buren Oliver was a VPI graduate in the class of 1933. He was a Horticulture major in the Coast Artillery Corps. He continued in the military after graduation, making it to 1st Lt. He died October 13, 2002.
Welford T. Oliver was born August 16, 1915 and died March 4, 1942. He attended and graduated from Blacksburg High School. He went to work in Richmond after his graduation. In June of 1941 he joined the military. A few months later he died of "Blood Disease" at Luke Field Hospital in Arizona. He is buried in Westview Cemetary in Blacksburg, Va.
Scope and Content
This collection contains 38 items of correspondence from friends and relatives in Roanoke, Charlottesville, and Blacksburg, Virginia, and other places to Russell V. Oliver and his mother Etta in Winchester, Salem, Goodwin Ferry, and Blacksburg, Virginia. There are personal and business correspondence, holiday and birthday cards, and the envelopes to which most of the correspondence came. The letters span from 1930-1948.

The materials are arranged in chronological order, with the undated materials at the back of the file.
