Biographical / Historical
The owner of this ledger is unidentified, but it may have belonged to William Davis. Inserted in the ledger is an 1879 court summons issued on behalf of Wm. Davis and Michael Cassell, administrators of the will of Margaret Davis. No further information is available.
Scope and Content
This collection consists of a single ledger with entries apparently made in Wythe County, Virginia. The entries document payments made to individuals for labor and income derived from sales of goods, including groceries. Among the names most frequently appearing in the ledger are those of the Earhart and Brown families, particularly Henry and Catherine Brown, both of whom apparently performed work for the ledger's owner. Among the other surnames appearing in the ledger are Fox, Moore, Six, Stuart, Umbarger, and Wade.
