Administrative History
The West Iron Gate Land Company, which operated Callie Iron Furnace in Botetourt County, Virginia, had its origins in Hileman, Cook and Company. The latter company was established during the late 19th century and was dissolved on April 1, 1881, when D. S. Cook and Harris Wilton sold their interest in the company to J. B. Hileman, O. T. Waring, E. J. Waring, and O. Hileman. Under this partnership, the company was reorganized as Hileman, Waring and Company. The new company continued to operate Callie Furnace and was in turn reorganized as the West Iron Gate land Company in 1890.
Scope and Content
This collection contains ledgers of the West Iron Gate Land Company a Clifton Forge (Alleghany County), Virginia manufacturer of pig iron. Included in the collection are three letter books, all containing letters apparently written by Octavius Hileman on behalf of various incarnations and subsidiaries of the West Iron Gate Land Company. In addition to a letter book from West Iron Gate Land Company, there is a volume from its predecessor, Hileman, Waring and& Company; and from Hileman and Colburn, which seems to have managed the company's land sales. The collection also contains a ledger recording the payment for lots sold at Iron Gate and an account book for Callie Furnace, detailing income and expenditures.
