Biographical Note
E. Jarvis was likely a Union soldier taken prisoner during the American Civil War. A stamp on this letter, reading "State of New York, Bureau of Military Statistics," suggests that Jarvis served in a New York regiment.
Scope and Content
This collection consists of a single letter written by E. Jarvis in Richmond, Virginia on January 15, 1864, during the American Civil War, and addressed to "Dear Companion." The contents of the letter suggest that, at the time of its writing, Jarvis was being held a prisoner of war. Jarvis writes briefly of his health and his prospects for relief.
