Biographical Note
Herbert Reed Pollard, Jr., son of Herbert R. and Ava Rawls Holland Pollard, was born in Portsmouth, Virginia, on May 15, 1913. He graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute (now Virginia Tech) with a degree in business administration in 1934. He married Mary Allen Everett (1915-2000) in Portsmouth on October 18, 1947; at the time, Pollard was employed as an office manager for Clinton E. Boyce. A 1951 Portsmouth city directory lists Pollard as a salesman for Boyce's. Herbert R. Pollard, Jr., died in Portsmouth on October 3, 2002, and was buried in Portsmouth's Olive Branch Cemetery.
Scope and Content
This collection contains three items collected by Herbert Reed Pollard, a graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute (1934, business administration), all relating to the university's Corps of Cadets during the 1930s. Included are a 1933 menu and camp roster from ROTC Week at Fort Humphreys, Virginia; a photograph of the officers of the Corps' Company E (H. C. Broyles, J. A. Lindsey, C. H. Shelhorse, L. L. Snedden, F. M. Wilder, H. R. Pollard, and H. H. Cox); and an undated newspaper clipping that includes a photograph of the Corps marching from City Hall Avenue toward Bain Field, Norfolk, Virginia, for the VPI vs. Maryland football game.
