Biographical Note
George J. Schmutz was born on December 13, 1848 in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. Schmutz is the son of John S. Schmutz and Catherine Appolonia Frey. Schmutz enlisted in the Union army in February 1864 and was mustered into 188th Pennsylvania Infantry, and was discharged in December 1865. Following the war, Schmutz married Amanda Catherine Walker and had four children. Schmutz passed away on September 7, 1932, in Cumberland, Maryland.

Scope and Contents
This collection contains two books compiled by George J. Schmutz. The first book is titled, "History of my boyhood days and early recollections of young manhood", and contains Schmutz' family history, poetry, political and opinion pieces, and civil war memoirs. The second book is titled, "Events in my young man days", and contains a history of the 188th Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry that was copied from a history written by Samuel Bates with added details and notes by Schmutz.
