Biographical Note
James Henry Lane (1833-1907) attened Virginia Military Institute and was a brigadier general in the Civil War as part of the Confederate Army. After the war, he was a professor and first commandant of the Corps of Cadets at Virginia Agriculutral and Mechanical College, now Virginia Tech. He also taught at the School of Mines in Missouri, now Missouri University of Science and Technology, and Alabama Poltechnic University, now Auburn University. He was married to Charlotte Randolph Meade Lane (1836-1888) and their children include Lidie, Mary, Kate, and Lottie.

Scope and Contents
The James H. Lane Research Collection is a collection of research revolving around James H. Lane. The collection includes scans of letters, newspaper clippings, and book excerpts, along with photographs, focusing on Lane's time in the Confederate Army, as well as his time as a professor at Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College (now Virginia Tech) and Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn University). The collection also includes two reels of microfilm, with their creation dated as 1991. The James H. Lane Papers Reel 1 of 2 was not included in the collection.
