The collection is unprocessed. Minimal description was completed prior to 2020, probably around 1993. Additional description completed in August 2021.
Biographical Note
Greenwood Hopkins Nowlin, Jr. (1878-1975) of Campbell County, Virginia, attended Virginia Agriculture and Mechanical College (now Virginia Tech) from 1896 through 1899. Nowlin also played the mandolin and violin with a group of other young men that would perform at school dances for free.
Nowlin was the son of Greenwood Hopkins Nowlin, Sr., and Lelia Pendleton, and he married Buelah Hall Terrell. He worked as a metallurgist at U.S. Steel.

Scope and Content
This collection contains an original cadet coatee from Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College (VAMC) dated 1886. The coat is woolen blue-gray with a cotton lining. It was manufactured by D. Klein and Bro. in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. A piece of tape inside the coat indicates the coat belonged to VAMC student Greenwood H. Nowlin, Jr.
