Biographical Note
John R. Little was born on July 10, 1844. During the American Civil War, he served in Company D, 129th Infantry Regiment, Union Army. The regiment mustered into service on June 5, 1864, served as Railroad Guards in Tennessee and Alabama, and mustered out on September 29, 1865. He died on September 21, 1929, and is buried alongside his wife Barbara in the Pawnee City Cemetery, Pawnee City, Nebraska.

Scope and Content
This collection contains a certificate from the federal government recognizing Private John R. Little, 139th Indiana Volunteer Infantry, for one hundred days of volunteer service in General W. T. Sherman's campaign during the American Civil War. The document was issued to volunteers in Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, and Wisconsin upon serving one hundred days in the army. The certificate is signed by President Abraham Lincoln and Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton.
