The Pittsylvania County Voter Ledger was purchased by Special Collections and University Archives in March 1994.

The processing, arrangement, and description of the Pittsylvania County Voter Ledger was completed in June 2023.

Historical Note

Pittsylvania County is the largest county in the Commonwealth of Virginia and was established in 1767. The county is named in honor of William Pitt, the Earl of Chatham, in recognition for his support of the American colonies during Stamp Act Crisis in 1765. The county is formed from the western portion of Halifax County and took on its size when Henry and Patrick counties separated from it in 1777.

Scope and Content

The Pittsylvania County Voter Ledger contains the names of individuals registered to vote in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, from 1896-1924. Separated into a folder are lists of women registering to vote in the 1920s for the first time after the passage of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
