The Coal Mining Photograph Album of the Virginias was purchased by Special Collections and University Archives in April 2016.

The processing, arrangement, and description of the Coal Mining Photograph Album of the Virginias was completed in August 2023.

Biographical Note

According to the National Parks Service (NPS), coal mining began in West Virginia in 1810 and "continued to grow even though the hopes for interregional development failed to materialize." The NPS also states, "coal operators of West Virginia supplied an ever-increasing percentage of coal for the nation's energy needs."
