Biographical Note
According to the National Parks Service (NPS), coal mining began in West Virginia in 1810 and "continued to grow even though the hopes for interregional development failed to materialize." The NPS also states, "coal operators of West Virginia supplied an ever-increasing percentage of coal for the nation's energy needs."
