Scope and Contents
This collection consists of two documents. One document is dated March 20, 1806 and certifies that the ship Melpomene sails under the United States flag. It is printed in Spanish, English, and Dutch and signed by multiple people including Thomas Jefferson, President of the United States, and James Madison, who was serving as Secretary of State at that time. The second document is a letter dated March 5, 1821 and written by Jefferson at Monticello to John Graves of Louisa County Court House, Virginia. The letter concerns the payment of a note by Jefferson.
