Biographical Information:
Jubal Anderson Early was born in Franklin County, Va. 3 November 1816. He graduated at United States Military Academy in 1837. He resigned from the army, studied law and practiced. He served in the Virginia General Assembly and in the Mexican War. He opposed secession. He was a colonel of the 24th Virginia Infantry. Rose to lieutenant-general and was defeated at Winchester, Fishers Hill, and Cedar Creek. He was employed by the Louisiana lottery and practiced law in Lynchburg. Wrote A Memoir of the Last Year of the War for Independence in the Confederate States of America (1866). He remained unreconstructed and died on 2 March 1894. Includes typescript of an account of the evening of the first day and the morning of the second day at the Battle of Gettysburg by [?] Turner; typescript of a report of Isaac Ridgeway Trimble regarding the Battle of Second Manassas; letter, 1867, of Mrs. E. C. Wirz [widow of Henry Wirz] thanking Early for a copy of his A Memoir of the Last Year of the War for Independence; and letter, 31 March 1884, from Early concerning Second Manassas and Antietam.
Also includes letter of John Thomas Gibson concerning a meeting between Lee and Grant on 10 April 1865; letter, 3 December 1890, of Early to Horatio G[ouverneur] Wright, sending copies of his memoir, relating the caving in of the walls to his quarters on top of him, false signal sent to deceive Wright at Cedar Creek, and errors in Grant's memoir; typescript of an account of the Battle of Cedar Creek by Samuel J.C. Moore; typescript of an account of the Battle of Second Manassas by James G. Field; typescript of extract of a diary, 13 June-12 August 1864 concerning Maryland and the Valley campaign of Early; newspaper clippings concerning differences between Early and William Mahone; and printed correspondence between Early and Mahone.

Encloses two copies of his "Memoir of the Last Year of the War"; his "quarters" were recently burned, and many of his papers and books were damaged; additionally, after the fire, he was searching through the ruins, when some of the walls crumbled, nearly killing him; had also sent many of his copies of "Memoirs" to the Southern Historical Society in Richmond; mentions a supposed dispatch from General Longstreet before the Battle of Cedar [Creek], which was false, as well as other stories circulating about that campaign in the [Shenandoah] Valley in connection with [Ulysses S.] Grant's "Personal Memoirs"; quotes Grant "Early had lost more men in killed wounded and captured than Sheridan commanded from the first to the last." 4 pages.
