Biographical / Historical

William Winston Snead attended William & Mary from 1897-1900.

Scope and Contents

The collection includes six Certificates of Distinction awarded to Snead.  There is one dated June 23, 1898 and presented to Snead for passing his examination in the Department of Pedagogy.  It is signed by Hugh S. Bird (Professor of Pedagogy) and Lyman Brown Wharton (Secretary of the Faculty).  The Wren Building is engraved on this certificate.  The other five certificates are dated June 22, 1899 and feature engravings of King William III and Queen Mary II.  Snead was awarded these certificates for passing the examination in the following subjects: Latin, Natural Sciences, American History, English, and Pedagogy.  The faculty signatures include Lyman Brown Wharton (Professor of Latin), Van F. Garrett (Professor of Natural Sciences), Lyon G. Tyler (Professor of American History and Politics), John Lesslie Hall (Professor of English Language and Literature), and Hugh S. Bird (Professor of Pedagogy).
