The M. Strickler Letters wereas part of the Civil War Collection, Mss. 39.1 C76, until November 2017. The former citation was Civil War Collection, Special Collections Research Center, Swem Library, College of William and Mary.
Scope and Contents
Letters from M. Strickler, manager for Joseph R. Anderson and Co., at Torry Furnace to Dr. Nelson Waller concern the three enslaved men Strickler borrowed from Waller. The men were under guard, but escaped. Strickler's letters explain the circumstances that led to their escape and the capture of one, Haws, by General Imboden.

Letter from M. Strickler, Manager, for Joseph R. Anderson and Co., at Torry Furnace, [Botetourt Co., Va.?] to Dr. Nelson Waller, no place. He justifies his conduct toward three escaped enslaved men, Haws, Peter, and Moses, belonging to Dr. Waller. He mentions Gen. John Daniel Imboden and his men who captured Haws and several other enslaved individuals. The General is ensuring their safety in Staunton.
Letter from M. Strickler, Manager for Joseph R. Anderson, at Torry Furnace, Augusta Co., Va., to Dr. Nelson Waller, no place. Strickler plans to send Haws [enslaved by Waller] home because he needs medical treatment. He hears that Moses and Peter were last seen in Craig Co., Va.
