Biographical Information:

William and Mary student, 1941-1945, a native of Hollis, N.Y. She was a business administration major, a member of Kappa Delta sorority and Phi Beta Kappa, and served in the U.S. Army Air Force Aircraft Warning Service during World War II. Scope and Contents

This collection contains diaries, photographs, and other material related to Margetta Doris (Hirsch) Doyle. The bulk of the collection consists of material related to Margetta Doyle's days as a student at Mary from 1941-1945. The collection also includes a diary, photographs, and financial information concerning a trip to China, Japan, and Hong Kong in the fall of 1984 by Margetta Hirsch Doyle, her husband, and two friends. The diaries contain summary notes compiled by Margetta Doyle.

Scope and Contents

This series contains a diary, photographs, and financial information related to a trip through China, Japan, and Hong Kong in the fall of 1984 by Margetta Hirsch Doyle, her husband, and two friends. The diary includes detailed entries of what they did and where they traveled. The diary also contains photographs and postcards of the places they visited, including the Great Wall of China, Terracotta Army, Ryoan-ji Temple in Kyoto, and the Daibutsu statue of Amida Buddha at Kotoku-in Temple in Kamakura, Japan. The diary contains summary notes compiled by Margetta Doyle.

    She begins her trip in Canada. She flies to Los Angeles, California where she visits old friends for a few days before flying to Tokyo. She visits Tokyo, Kyoto, Hong King, Canton, Shanghai, Suzhou, Xian and Beijing. She visits every important site during all her stops, which includes palaces, museums, Tokyo navy yard, restaurants, temples, embassies, gardens, parks, theatres, factories, schools, rivers, lakes, markets, terra cotta statues, hot springs and more. She describes in great detail what she sees and experiences, including restaurants, ceremonies, shopping areas, hotels, culture, the people, art, weather, roads, food, and transportation.
