Scope and Contents

Account book (Acc. 1984.014) of the father of the 4th President of the United States during the American Revolution. Names of notable Virginian and military men are within the accounts including Colonel Taylor, Captain Daingerfield, Robert Johnson, James and Ambrose Madison (his sons), John Page, Thomas Shackeford, James Tomlinson, William Wright, and James Finney. Accounts are for the purchase of flour, shoes, stockings, wagons, and other sundry goods for the military. There are also transactions for money to raise soldiers and a large sum of 900 to buy iron and cotton in support of the Army. The Almanac contains astronomy and calendar events, information regarding the courts of Virginia, travel time from various cities, country populations, directions for tanning hides, and cures for Flux and Pleurisy.
