Scope and Contents
This collection contains materials on the Tidewater Labor Support Committee (TLSC), TLSC's Living Wage Campaign, and the Living Wage Coalition (LWC). Much of the collection consists of material collected by James Spady including correspondence from 2000-2001, articles, reports, studies, and other resource materials related to labor relations in the U.S., Virginia, the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, and the College of William and Mary.
The first box contains meeting notes, emails, and correspondence among student members, workers, and the W&M administration. Reports and resource materials on wages and working conditions at William and Mary, Colonial Williamsburg, and in Virginia are also included. Some of these materials include: a Grievance Procedure Manual for workplace disputes, The Self-Sufficiency Standard for Virginia by Diana Pearce, a sociology honors thesis on working conditions of W&M housekeepers, and a W&M Report to the President. The second box contains news articles about TLSC, the Living Wage Campaign, and the LWC in addition to articles on subjects such as food production, animal rights, corporations, living wages and living wage campaigns, etc. The collection also contains fliers for presentations and film screenings, rallies and marches about workers rights and the Iraq occupation, worker appreciation brunches, and the sex workers art show. Labor newspapers from late 1990s early 2000s, William and Mary Service Employee Union materials, and conference materials are included in the collection.
Acc. 2012.172 contains training documents, books, zines, and other publications relating to student organizing. Acc. 2012.173 contains organizational materials, such as meeting minutes and notes; training documents; publications; and conference material.
Acc. 2016.130 contains correspondence, reports, and bank account creation records of the Tidewater Labor Support Commission (TLSC). These records relate to the Living Wage Campaign Collection within the University Archives of the College of William and Mary. Of note is a letter from P. Geoffrey Feiss, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, to Cindy Hahamovitch dated August 17, 1999. In the letter, Feiss rebukes an email Hahamovitch sent via a William and Mary list serve on behalf of TLSC that was political in nature. Feiss reminded Hahamovitch that the e-mail distribution contained her signature as Assistant Dean of Graduate Studies which implied official endorsement of the political event and that she should not use a publically funded e-mail system on behalf of a political cause.
