Biographical / Historical
The Festival Mondial de la Jeunesse et des Etudiants (or World Festival of Youth and Students) is organized by the World Federation of Democratic Youth and the International Union of Students. The first meeting was held in 1947, in Czechoslovakia (now the Czech Republic). Other festival sites include Moscow, Russia, and Quito, Ecuador. Initially a joint effort between Allied nations and the USSR post-World War II, the event increasingly pushed Soviet ideology during the Cold War.
Scope and Contents
8 screen-printed posters collected during first official visit to post-revolutionary Cuba by United States citizens. Posters were for the 1978 Festival Mondial de la Jeunesse et des Etudiants (or World Festival of Youth and Students) held in Havana, Cuba.
3 of the 8 posters are for films from Hungary (Las Fronteras del Amor, directed by Janos Szucs), Czech Republic (Cronica de un Verano Ardiente, directed by Jiri Sequens), and Italy (Divina Criatura, directed by Giuseppe Patroni).
Remaining posters are political and youth-oriented: "Joven del Mundo Cuba Es Tu Casa [Youth of the World, Cuba is your home]" with phrase written in several languages; "Pour la solidarite anti-imperialiste pour la paix et l'amitie [For anti-imperial solidarity for peace and friendship]" with raised fist breaking free from chains; "Cuba, '78" with photograph of lighthouse, phrase also written in several languages; "Solidaridad" with four white doves surrounding blue globe; and "La Juventud Cumplira Todos Sus Comprimisos con el Festival [The Youth will fulfill all their commitments with the Festival]" with male and female figures raising their clasped hands.
