The collection is open to all researchers. Manuscript collections and archival records may contain materials with sensitive or confidential information that is protected under federal or state right to privacy laws and regulations, such as the Virginia Public Records Act (Code of Virginia. § 42.1-76-91); and the Virginia Freedom of Information Act (Code of Virginia § 2.2-3705.5). Confidential material may include, but is not limited to, educational, medical, and personnel records. If sensitive material is found in this collection, please contact a staff member immediately. Biographical / Historical

Juneteenth, a portmanteau of "June Nineteenth," marks the day in 1865 that U.S. General Gordon Granger arrived with his troops in Galveston, Texas to read General Orders No. 3, "The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Exceutive of the United States, all slaves are free."

Juneteenth became a Virginia state holiday in October 2020, and was recognized as a federal holiday on June 17, 2021.

William & Mary celebrated Juneteenth in person for the first time on June 17, 2022, at the site of "Hearth: Memorial to the Enslaved."
