Collection is open to all researchers. Manuscript collections and archival records may contain materials with sensitive or confidential information that is protected under federal or state right to privacy laws and regulations, such as the Virginia Public Records Act (Code of Virginia. § 42.1-76-91); and the Virginia Freedom of Information Act (Code of Virginia § 2.2-3705.5). Biographical / Historical

Frederick August Mayo (1785-1853) was a bookbinder based in Richmond, Virginia. He partnered with Philip DuVal and launched Frederick A. Mayo & Company in 1815. He was Thomas Jefferson's primary bookbinder in the last decade of his life, likewise producing materials for the Circuit Superior Court of the Law Chancery of Nicholas County, Virginia.

Content Description

This 1831 invoice lists seventeen books and one custom box produced by Frederick August Mayo (1785-1853) for the Circuit Superior Court of the Law Chancery of Nicholas County, Virginia. The invoice is addressed on the verso to P. Burne, Esq. Merchant Lewisburg, Greenbrier County, Virginia, with a circular date stamp and the manuscript note "paid." Mayo was the primary bookbinder for Thomas Jefferson during the last decade of his life.
